Summer means a beauty bag overhaul. Hello to summer holiday necessities and goodbye to trusty winter favs- I’m looking at you Estee Lauder Double Wear and you Benefit They’re Real. Summer time is about replacing this heavier make-up and over done hair styles with lighter, softer alternatives for a fresher look. We’ve achieved our perfect fake tan so now let’s look at what products we can use to accentuate and perfect the holiday glow. Summer is about golden skin, fluttery eye lashes and full lips- a look I return to year after year. But it’s also about enhancing your own natural beauty. The holiday look is pared back and subtle, and for this there’s not a contour kit or false lash strip in sight.
The Oil Free tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier is a lovely alternative to thicker, heavier foundations. It’s non greasy, and goes on like a dream, evening out skin tone. The fact that it’s buildable allows blemishes to be easily concealed and doesn’t sacrifice coverage. On particularly bad skin days I’ll add a little of Laura Mercier’s secret camouflage to hide any flaws and to brighten my under eye area. This provides a really beautiful, natural look and the overall impression of a ‘good skin day.’
Eyeko mascaras have been a fairly recent discovery for me and oh my word- they are just brilliant. The curved bristle brush creates extra strong definition, volume and curl from root to lash tip. Think thick, super feathery, and curly. I like toning down my makeup for summer, but for me, mascara stays fuller than ever. Dramatic lashes will never go out of fashion- and rightly so. If you buy one beauty product today, let it be this. Lashes for days.
The. Ultimate. Bronzer. Expensive, yes, but absolutely worth every penny. From the gorgeous packaging to the dreamy highlighting pigments, the Tom Ford bronzer embodies luxury in every sense. The silky lightweight texture with a non-drying finish allows for a lovely, buildable glow with not so much as a hint of ageing sparkle. Using a big fluffy brush I blend across the apples of my cheeks, across my eyelids, along my hairline and against the tip of my nose for flawless tan enhancement. Glowy goodness.
Nothing says summer like a sweet coral lip. Paul and Joes shade Strawberry Jam is the dream. I never like anything too ‘full-on’ for summer, so the fact that this shade is softly pigmented for a more natural colour really appeals to me. One swift slick adds a gorgeous plumpness and the most subtle of sparkle. Better yet, this particular colour really brings out the whiteness of your teeth. And never has a lipstick been more dressing table worthy- that packaging! psst..if you live in NI I picked this up in Cameo Boutique in Ballyclare- an absolute haven for beautiful make-up!
During the Summer months I like to switch my scent from my usual Pomegranate Noir by Jo Malone. Although totally delicious, I find it to be a darker, heavier perfume, more suited to the colder months. My summer spritz of choice is Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino. Blended with aromatic Tunisian neroli, Italian bergamot and zesty Sicilian lemon, this is a truly beautiful scent and is as seductive as it is romantic. Immediately, I’m transported to sun kissed skin, balmy evenings by the beach and salty hair. A little splash against my wrists and behind my ears is enough to last throughout the evening.
A really great alternative to Bumble and Bumbles more expensive salt spritz is Style Freedom’s Beach Body Spray. I scrunch into wet hair before letting it partially air dry. I’ll then plait my hair, taking it out gently when it’s fully dry. Hello lovely, soft beach waves. It’s also non sticky which is ideal- there’s nothing worse than the dirty, gritty texture some salt sprays leave behind.
So there we have it. My summer holiday make-up look. Do you have any of your own summery makeup must haves? Let me know! Now get me to the sun…
