‘We believe that every woman should be afforded the luxury of beautiful pearls, everyday.’
Beautiful pearls. Exactly what Claudia Bradby Jewellery do best. Using freshwater cultured pearls, hand chosen for their lustre, shape and size, the brand pride themselves on the adaptability of their pieces which are ‘designed for every conceivable wardrobe.’ And yet, somehow, the classic pearl is reinvented. Given a gorgeous update. Timeless? Yes. Contemporary? Absolutely. The Moonlight Collection as an example- made for layering and ‘inspired by the romance of the night sky.’ I adore ‘effortless’ jewels. Jewels I can stack. Jewels that look beautiful, even when I’ve thrown on a simple, staple outfit. Naturally then, I was only too thrilled to have the opportunity to ask Claudia herself a few questions about the brand she has nurtured from the ground- a brand that now counts The Duchess of Cambridge amongst their fans…
How did Claudia Bradby Jewellery come about?
It all started while I was living in Hong Kong in 1999 – I loved exploring the city, particularly the gemstone and pearl markets. As a gift for a visiting friend I made up a simple necklace of pearls strung on a knotted piece of leather. She loved it and I began making them for other friends and family for my return trips to the UK, travelling around the markets to pick out the pearls. The penny dropped that pearls didn’t have to be traditional or ‘saved for best’, they could be as modern and adaptable as any other gem.
What’s the inspiration behind your brand?
The pearls themselves are my inspiration, I find them incredibly beautiful – their lustre and femininity are very compelling. When I first started looking into them I found a world beyond the traditional pearls I had come across previously – the myriad of different shapes, colours and types opened up a seam of creativity.
Who would you love to see wear your pieces?
One of our style icons is Sarah Jessica Parker, who really rocks the gorgeous pearl necklace worn casually over a grey T-shirt and jeans look. This epitomizes our vibe – low key luxe – reinventing how pearls can be worn and styled.
What are your holy grail beauty products?
Eve Lom hot cloth cleanser. I love the massaging element of putting it on, and the hot flannel really makes my skin feel super clean. That apart I use Ren products as I have very sensitive skin and their products really work for me.
What song would be the soundtrack to your life?
Ooh, that is so difficult. I’m going to have to say Dancing Queen as Abba are my guilty pleasure and I would very much like to be Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia when I get to that age… I also think it is hard to not feel joyous listening to it and I’d like to feel that I have had the time of my life!
A quote to live by?
The world is your oyster. We have a pendant in our collection that has this engraved on a silver disc that is cast from a shell my mum brought me back from the beach in Australia where I was born. I like the positive vibe it brings and it is something I truly believe in.
And finally, if we could only own one Claudia Bradby piece, what should it be?
That is like being asked which is your favourite child! A very tricky question as I am all about building a jewellery wardrobe with a few core staples that everyone should have; a pair of pearl studs, a good pearl necklace, some layering pieces and one-off wow items. I do like jewellery to work hard for its keep so a composeable element to the design is important to me. For that reason I’d have to say a pair of our jacket earrings because they can be worn either as a simple pearl stud or with the ear jacket below/behind the lobe. If I could only pick one piece for myself it would be the world is your oyster necklace as it is a talisman, of sorts.
