I’ve done it. I’ve finally done it. I’ve worked out the absolute dream combo that allows the most gorgeous sun kissed facial tan. Goodbye to unsightly streaks and tangerine hair lines and hello to lovely, natural looking bronze skin, void of any drama. By following these (seriously) simple steps you’ll be ready to glow in no time.
Removing all traces of makeup is of the utmost importance to insure an even application of colour. I adore Garnier’s cheap and cheerful Micellar water for oily skin to remove the initial layers. I then follow with a foaming cleanser- I’m currently loving the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Gel which removes excess sebum and leaves my skin clear and fresh. This is a daily cleanser for oily, acne prone skin (lucky me) but it’s incredibly gentle and isn’t harsh or drying.
I only properly exfoliate my skin once a week, as it’s quite sensitive to breakouts. However, prior to a tan application I pay particular attention to the exfoliation of two main areas. I’ll use Grounded Coconut Lip Scrub around my lips to keep them soft and moisturised, allowing any tan to glide naturally around them. This is an absolute dream of a product, tanning or not, and is the key for perfect lipstick application. (And kissable lips!) Grounded also do a selection of great facial scrubs which I rub across my eyebrows to remove any dry areas that the tan might cling to. Because despite what we thought in school, sun-kissed eyebrows are definitely not a thing.
I’ve finally jumped on the Pixi Glow Tonic band wagon. The cult toner instantly refreshes skin by dissolving the bonds that bind dead skin cells to the surface. It may sound harsh, but it absolutely isn’t. Ingredients including witch hazel, white horse chestnut and aloe vera to improve fine lines, sun damage and overall vibrancy and plumpness. One sweep across the skin with a cotton pad removes any final stubborn traces of makeup, whilst skin is left fresh and radiant, finally revealing the perfect base.
Moisturise and Tan
And here we have it. The holy grail. The facial tan wonder product I’ve been waiting for. And it’s fool proof. Hallelujah! Combined with your moisturiser (current fav is Loreal Hydra Genius) The Face by Tan-Luxe creates the most gorgeous and flawless of complexions. I mix around two self-tan drops into my moisturiser and gently massage into my skin, paying extra attention to any ‘problem’ areas such as my hairline. By taking the time to blend well I avoid any potential mishaps. And just like that, by morning my complexion is glowing with a soft, subtle tan. Long term, The Face boasts properties of Raspberry Seed Oil, Vitamin E and Aloe Vera for a wealth of skin benefits.
Bronzing & Highlighting
I like to enhance a facial tan with a touch of makeup. After applying a light layer of foundation as normal (I’m currently loving Nars Sheer Glow in Santa Fe) I use a big fluffy brush to apply Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in Terra across my forehead, eyelids, chin, the sides of my nose and anywhere else the sun would naturally hit. If I’m heading out in the evening, I’ll go a little heavier to create a beautiful candlelit glow. The Tom Ford compact is the height of luxury thanks to the incredible mixture of sunstone, amber, and black tourmaline crystals. I know-right?! It may be pricey, but it’s definitely worth investing in and the packaging itself just embodies luxe. On my lips, I’ll use a subtle coral toned lipstick to enhance the golden look. Laura Mercier have some beautiful shades with a gentle shimmer. Finally, I’ll use Nuxe Golden Shimmer dry oil as a highlighter adding an understated glimmer. Using my finger I’ll dab under my eyebrows, on the tip of my nose, across my cheek bones and finally over my collar bones for definition and a satin finish.
