Once again we’re on the cusp of a new year. But for some (myself included) January can be a time of despair. Gone is the buzz of Christmas. Living rooms look sparse, purses feel empty and we’re back to the mundanity of work. This January is a more uncertain month for me than ever as I’m ‘starting afresh’ for several reasons. After graduating in June, I decided to dedicate the coming months to interning with a number of magazines in London, something which can feel a little uncertain at the best of times. When have I got enough experience under my belt? When should I knuckle down and apply for an actual job? After many tears and stresses over the past few weeks I decide to make a little list of advice to myself in an attempt to make 2017 a little less overwhelming, a little more sensible, and ultimately, a helluva lot more enjoyable.
It’s no coincidence that I was bought a whopping six notebooks for Christmas- perhaps a hint at my shoddy organisational skills? This is the year I’ll stop using my iPhone as a diary and plan ahead, not getting dates and days confused and to-do lists built up. And with some of the most beautiful notepads and diaries about at this time of year we have absolutely no excuse not to invest in some stylish stationary to make planning ahead a very pretty affair indeed.
Eating well & Exercising
Ah yes, the old new year resolution classic, how could it not make the list?! In terms of feeling good and, of course, looking good, exercise and healthy eating are musts. After letting both go to pot towards the end of this year I’ve suffered from problem skin, loss of tone and generally low moods. To improve these I plan to NurtiBullet in the mornings instead of skipping breakfast. Here’s one of my favourite recipes for a delicious green smoothie packed with protein, good carbs and healthy fats. As a pre-work juice, the ingredients help to stock up on energy and keep us full for a long time. Ideal.
2 cups fresh spinach
2 cups almond milk, unsweetened
1 large apple, cored, any variety
⅓ cup rolled oats
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Soups will also act as a great nutrient rich lunch time choice. I’m obsessed with this My New Roots coconut soup and can’t wait to try it as an exciting alternative to vegetable broth.
Hello radiant skin and a fitter, healthier body!
Choosing Quality over Quantity
As I’ve got older, I’ve realised this mantra can apply to many aspects of my life, from friends to work. In this instance I’m talking about clothes. In 2017 I’m going to cut back on fast fashion and save towards particular ‘pieces’ that won’t date. Whether that be a JCrew cashmere knit, an Acne scarf or an All Saints Leather jacket (or all three funds permitting!) I want pieces that will last throughout the seasons, both in terms of quality and simplicity. And yes, this means avoiding the next H&M designer collaboration at all costs….
Reading & Writing
As I hope to go down the route of journalism, the continual improvement of my writing style is vital. Writing is something I endeavour to work at this year and this will come, mostly, through reading. Which brings me to my one official New Years resolution- to get through a novel a week. As aforementioned, thus far I’ve a few months to spend working in London this year. Amongst the hustle and bustle of tubes I know the capital can be a lonely city, so I think a good book will act as the ultimate company when I get back to my room in the evenings. And maybe a glass of wine?! Either way, if I improve on my reading, I’ll improve on my writing and thus make positive steps towards my chosen career. Plus who doesn’t love the escapism of a good book?
Appreciating The Little Things
Not everything has to be looking towards the next big trip away or the next big purchase. 2017 will be a year to appreciate the little things. A walk with family. A fresh bunch of flowers. Brunch with my friends. A manicure. Even a hot mug of tea.
So that’s it. Hopefully, just hopefully, by adhering to the above I’ll make January and the coming months productive and ultimately happy ones. Do you have any new year tips/resolutions? I’d love to hear!
