Sunday 26th of March impends. Mother’s Day. A day to fully appreciate all that our Mums and other lovely ladies in our lives do for us. As I knew I’d be working in London on the day itself I was aware I’d need to get my act together and sort out a little treat for my own Mother. But what to go for? Slipper socks? A house plant? A box of Milk Tray? Not this year. I was delighted when the opportunity arose to treat Mum (and myself!) to a day away at Galgorm Resort and Spa for some general relaxation and bliss, ultimately securing my position as favourite child for another year.
We began our day away with afternoon tea enjoyed in the picturesque River room and conservatory, boasting a stunning view of the rapids and surrounding forest. Décor was classic and opulent, with little dashes of marble peppered throughout the room adding to the lux feel. If you’re anything like me, stiff formality can be off-putting, so to find Galgorm to be warm and friendly was wonderful. Service was personal without being intrusive, meaning we could fully enjoy ourselves and feel at ease. We were looked after by James who talked us through the most delicious afternoon tea menu that included a choice of sandwiches, miniature soups, freshly baked scones and a variety of sweet treats. Again, me being me, there was an unspoken fear that afternoon tea would leave my stomach rumbling, but that definitely wasn’t the case. Flavours were delicate and totally beautiful and everything was plentiful. Expertly crafted fillings and toppings meant that the cakes were almost too pretty to eat. Almost. We nibbled on our treats and sipped on our various loose leaf teas for a good few hours, appreciating the gorgeous views, attentive service and relaxed atmosphere.
Satisfied and fantastically bloated, we
squeezed slipped into our swimwear to spend the rest of our afternoon around Galgorm’s thermal village. Known for being one of the best spa experiences in Northern Ireland, my only regret is not having had gone sooner. Set in an idyllic woodland location, the beauty of it all really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. With a whole array of outdoor and indoor experiences to be enjoyed we were spoilt for choice from the get go- but a glass of prosecco seemed like the only truly sensible way to begin a whole afternoon of relaxing and rejuvenating.
Set on the banks of the tumbling River Maine, we hopped between the outdoor Jacuzzi Pool and Hot tub. This was a chance to truly relax, enjoying our stunning surroundings. Mum enjoyed the River House, a tranquil room raised on stilts with breath-taking views. My personal favourite was the infinity hydrotherapy pool which incorporated a variety of therapeutic massage jets to ease tired muscles. A variety of sanarium and sauna experiences and an invigorating (but not for the faint hearted) snow cabin reap health benefits adding to the overall luxury and enjoyment.
After a few hours relaxing, Mum was lucky enough to be treated to a soothing full body massage whilst I had to make do with sipping prosecco in the sunshine. Which, as you can imagine, was truly awful. I chose to kick back over a magazine in the Orangery, a relaxation room with swing chairs, bespoke beds and tranquil music. It also contained one very sleepy gal.
Although Mum assured me that her massage treatment was utterly divine, there’s already so much to enjoy and appreciate at the Thermal Village, so it was merely a bonus and definitely not a necessary part of the Galgorm experience. Because that’s just what The Galgorm Resort and Spa is; an experience. Treating your Mum, or Granny (or whoever that special lady is) to what will essentially be a memory of a wonderful day out, seems like a more thoughtful way to show your appreciation than any old gift. So treat her to that afternoon tea, book that massage or get down to the Thermal Village. Heck, do all three. Final note: if either Mum or I go missing-you know where we are.
The Galgorm are currently offering a special Mother’s Day afternoon tea on the 25th & 26th of March. With prices starting at £29.95 we’ve no excuse not to treat our lovely Mums!
